Biographical Sketch/
Administrative History:
Paul Medow was born on 10 March 1926 in Prague, Czechoslovakia (now in the Czech Republic) of Russian parents. He is a retired Professor of Economic Cybernetics at York University. Medow received his secondary school education at the Lycée Hoche, Versailles, France before serving in the United States Infantry, 1944-1945. He took his degrees at Cornell University (B.A.S. 1950) and Columbia University (Ph.D. 1960). Medow was a member of Dr. Karl Polanyi’s Research Seminar on Non-Market Institutions (1957-1964). He was part of the group of academics who worked closely with Polanyi in the 1950s and 1960s at Columbia University, and he also served as Assistant Editor (1965-1967) of "Coexistence", the journal initiated by Polanyi in the early 1960s to encourage the collaboration and dialogue of international scholars across the Cold War divide. Prior to becoming a faculty member at York University in 1968, Medow taught at Rutgers University (1957-1966) and the New York School for Social Research (1966-1968). At York University, Medow was a founding member of the Program on Political and Social Thought, as well as the founder and Chairman (1970-1989) of York’s Economic Research Systems Planning Group. Medow has published numerous research papers and articles and delivered many conference papers on institutional and international economics, programs and systems planning, subcontracting of global environmental, and the application of computer simulations to the aforementioned topics. In addition, he has been involved in many professional international committees and conferences, notably those in association with or of the Institute de la Vie. He died on 20 May 2005 in Toronto, Canada.
