Biographical Sketch/
Administrative History:
Hartwell Bowsfield, archivist, professor and historian, was born on 7 July 1922 and educated at the University of Manitoba (B.A. 1948) and the University of Toronto (Ph.D. 1977). Bowsfield was the Provincial Archivist of Manitoba from 1952-1967, following which he became the first University Archivist of York University in 1970, a position he held until his retirement in 1988. In addition to his archival work, Bowsfield was a lecturer and an assistant and later an associate professor of history at York from 1970 to 1978. He also lectured on archives administration at the Faculty of Library Science at the University of Toronto. Bowsfield is the author or editor of numerous publications including "The James Wickes Taylor Papers, 1859-1870" and "Louis Riel, Rebel of the Western Frontier" and has contributed articles on Western Canadian History to scholarly journals and to edited histories of Canada.
Scope and Content:

Fonds consists of personal and professional correspondence, professorial notes and related resource material, research notes and drafts of stories related to Manitoba history written for CBC Radio, copies of articles and reviews written by Bowsfield and notes and drafts pertaining to "Louis Riel: Rebel of the Western Frontier or Victim of Politics and Prejudices" and "The James Wickes Taylor Correspondence: 1859-1870". Also included are copies of old newspapers dating from 1692 to 1917 collected by Bowsfield and general research files relating to the Hudson's Bay Company, Rupert's Land and to the History of Archives.
