Biographical Sketch/ Administrative History: | Shauna Singh Baldwin (1962-), author and radio producer, was born in Montreal, Quebec and holds an M.B.A. from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and an M.F.A. from the University of British Columbia. She has worked as a radio producer and e-commerce consultant but is best known as a writer of novels and short story collections. Her fiction and poetry have been widely published in literary magazines and anthologies in Canada, the United States and India. Her first novel, "What the Body Remembers", was published in 1999 and received the 2000 Commonwealth Writer's Prize for Best Book in the Canada-Caribbean region. It has been translated into more than a dozen languages. Her second novel "The Tiger Claw" was a finalist for the 2004 Giller Prize. She was awarded the 1996 Friends of American Writers Award for her collection of short stories "English Lessons and Other Stories". She is also the co-author of "A Foreign Visitor's Survival Guide to America," and author of "We Are Not in Pakistan : Stories" published in 2007. |

The fonds consists of material that documents Baldwin's career as a writer and includes correspondence, drafts, manuscripts and edited manuscripts of her books "A Foreign Visitor's Survival Guide to America," "English Lessons and Other Stories," "What the Body Remembers," "The Tiger Claw," "We Are Not in Pakistan," her forthcoming novels tentatively titled "Gateway of the World," and "The Selector of Souls" as well as drafts, correspondence, and promotional material related to the play "We Are So Different Now." Fonds also contains a sound recording of Baldwin reading "The Japji Sahib". |
