Biographical Sketch/
Administrative History:
Janice Kulyk Keefer (1952-), writer, critic and scholar, was born in Toronto, Ontario and educated at the University of Toronto where she received a BA in English literature in 1974, and the University of Sussex where she received a MA in modern literature in 1976 and a PhD in English literature in 1983. She has been a professor of literature and creative writing at the University of Guelph since 1990, is the author of over ten books and has written in numerous genres including poetry, short and long fiction, non-fiction and children's literature. Her writing has won or been nominated for several awards including awards by the CBC Radio Literary Competition and the National Magazine Award Foundation. Her collection of short stories entitled "Travelling Ladies" was nominated for the Commonwealth Writers' Prize, Canada and Caribbean in 1991. Her novel "The Green Library" and her study of Canadian fiction from the Maritimes entitled "Under Eastern Eyes" were both nominated for Governor-General's Awards. She was the recipient of the Marian Engel Award for her body of work in 1999. Keefer is also the co-editor of the anthologies "Two Lands, New Visions: Stories from Canada and Ukraine" and "Precarious Present / Promising Future?: Ethnicity and Identities in Canadian Literature". Her work has also appeared in numerous journals and anthologies.
Scope and Content:

Fonds consists of material that documents Keefer's career as a writer and academic and, as such, includes personal and professional correspondence with writers such as Don Coles, Douglas Glover, Isabel Huggan, Susan Kerslake, Anne Michaels and Robert Weaver among others; files related to her work with the Eden Mills Writers' Festival and House of Anansi; notes and drafts of poems and short stories written by Keefer and notes, drafts and manuscript copies of her published works of fiction and non-fiction including "Rest Harrow", "The Green Library", "Thieves" and "Honey and Ashes: A Story of Family".

Access granted only with the written permission of Janice Kulyk Keefer until her death, at which time access is unrestricted. Researchers seeking access must make written application to Janice Kulyk Keefer through the University Archivist, outlining their research project and their purpose in consulting the Janice Kulyk Keefer fonds.
