| Biographical Sketch/ Administrative History: | CAWIS (Canadian Association for Women in Science) was formed in 1981. It started as a chapter of the U.S. based Association for Women in Science (AWIS), but a decision was made at the chapter meeting in May, 1981 to from a wholly Canadian organization in order to better serve the needs of Canadians. CAWIS initiatives and activities include publishing a CAWIS newsletter; co-ordinating public seminars and lectures; promoting science education in high schools for girls; supporting, lobbying, informing organizations, ministries, associations on issues relevant to women and science; participating in conferences on women and science; establishing a CAWIS award to Canadian women in science; establishing a Canadian registry of women in science; and marketing the organization CAWIS to the general public and women involved/interested in scientific professions. |
