Biographical Sketch/
Administrative History:
Joseph Robert Starobin (1913-1976), educator and author, was affiliated with the Department of Political Science at Glendon College (1969) and remained there until his death in 1976. Starobin had been a member of the Communist Party of the United States, worked as the foreign editor of the 'Daily worker,' and travelled to several Communist nations in Eastern Europe and China. He left the party in 1956, returned to school and acquired the PhD from Columbia University. Starobin was the author of 'American communism in crisis, 1943-1957,' (1972) and 'Eyewitness in Indo-China,' (1968).
Scope and Content:

The fonds consists of research materials of Joseph Starobin on American radicalism and European socialism and includes several newspapers from France, Italy and North America, as well as off-prints, typescripts and photocopies of articles by colleagues and writers on the left (Harrington, Marcuse, Earl Bowder). It also includes some holograph notes of lectures attended by Starobin in 1963 in New York (classes in his graduate studies at Columbia?), and correspondence and photocopies of chapters of a thesis from a doctoral committee at York University on which he sat (1975).

Custodial History: Part of Accesssion 1 (1978-016) was received from the Department of Political Science, Glendon College, in August 1978. Other parts were transferred from the collection of Starobin's books in the Scott Library, York University in January, 1981.
