Biographical Sketch/
Administrative History:
The Beer family was established in Ontario by Christopher Beer, a retired commander in the British navy, who was granted several hundred acres of land in Metcalfe Township in the early 1800's. In the early 1900's, Jacob Beer, a descendent of Christopher Beer, lived in Strathroy, Ontario, and had five children: Christopher, Joan, Walter, Vivien and Winlow. Private Walter Beer was a soldier with the 48th Regiment (Highlanders) during World War I and was killed in action in France. Vivien Beer was engaged to Captain James R. Allan, who was also killed in action in France in 1916.
Scope and Content:

Fonds consists of correspondence between Captain James R. Allan and Vivien Beer of Strathroy, Ontario before Captain Allan, was killed; press clippings and photographs of Captain Allan and Private Walter Beer while serving in World War I and scenes of various members of the Beer family.

Custodial History: Mrs. Hazel Moses of Strathroy inherited the possessions of Joan Beer including documents relating to World War I which she (Moses) collected together and sent to Prof. Jack Granatstein in 1994 for deposit in the archives.
