Biographical Sketch/
Administrative History:
Fernand Ouellet (1926- ), author and educator, was educated at Laval University (PhD 1965). He taught at Laval University, Carleton University and the University of Ottawa (1961-1985) prior to joining the History Department at York University in 1986. Ouellet has been recognized as a major contributor to the historical understanding of Canada and has received numerous prizes, awards and honours including the Tyrell Medal of the Royal Society of Canada (1969), the Governor General's Award for non-fiction (1977), the Sir John A. Macdonald prize of the Canadian Historical Association (1977) and others. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada serving as honorary secretary 1977-1980. Ouellet served as President of the Canadian Historical Association (1970) and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada (1979). He was also the editor of 'Histoire sociale/social history,' (1971-1988). Ouellet is the author of several works on the history of nineteenth-century French Canada including 'Histoire économique et sociale du Québec, 1760-1850,' (1966), 'Le Bas-Canada, 1791-1840,' and 'Louis Joseph Papineau, un être divisé,' (1960).
Scope and Content:

The fonds partially documents Fernand Ouellet's research and writing activities for the period 1956-1984. It mainly includes correspondence, notes, manuscripts and archival material collected in the course of his research.

Custodial History: These papers were originally deposited at the Archives of Ontario in March, 1988, and were transferred to the York University Archives in July, 1989.
