Biographical Sketch/
Administrative History:
Stewart Crysdale (1914- ), educator, author and minister, joined the York University Sociology Department in 1967 following careers in journalism and the ministry including time as a church officer. He served as editor of 'British Columbia municipal news' (1936-1939) and later as assistant editor of 'B.C. miner' (1939-1943), before entering the ministry of the United Church of Canada, first in British Columbia and later in Ontario. In 1964 he was asked to conduct a survey of attitudes of Canadian longshoremen affiliated with the International Seamen's Union, on behalf of the Religion-Labour Council. From 1964-1967 he served as associate secretary, Board of Evangelism and Social Service, United Church of Canada, while completing his doctoral studies at the University of Toronto. Beginning in 1968, Crysdale and others conducted a long-term survey of working class youths' attitudes towards school and work in east-end Toronto. Crysdale is the author of several studies on religion in Canadian society including 'The industrial struggle and Protestant ethics in Canada,' (1961), and 'The changing church in Canada,' (1965). In addition, he has written monographs and articles in the fields of sociology and work, including 'Youth's transition to work in Eastside,' (1992), 'Sociology Canada' (1976) with Christopher Beattie, and 'Youth's passage from school to work in Eastside: a comparative longitudinal study,' (1993), with Harry Mackay.
Scope and Content:

The fonds consists of Stewart Crysdale records pertaining to his activities with the Seamen's International Union survey, the United Church Quebec-Sherbrooke survey, and the "Eastside" youth project.
