Biographical Sketch/ Administrative History: | The Co-operative Commonwealth Federation was created in 1932 at Calgary. With the signing of the Regina Manifesto (1933), the movement became an electoral political party and enjoyed great success in the province of Saskatchewan where it formed the provincial government for several years The CCF also enjoyed limited success in Ontario (Official Opposition in 1943), as well as on the federal scene. The party changed its name to New Democratic Party in 1960. |
Scope and Content: |
The fonds consists of transcripts of interviews conducted with several leading lights of the Canadian socialist and Canadian Co-operative Federation movements. Included are interviews with Hazen Argue, William Irvine, David Lewis, Tommy Douglas, Grace McInness, Frank Underhill, and Tim Buck. The interviews were conducted in 1961 for a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation radio broadcast, titled ’Socialism in Canada,’ and was broadcast in July, 1961. |
Custodial History: | The interviews from which these transcripts are photocopied were conducted by Paul Fox, Department of Political Economy, University of Toronto, in 1961. The copies were deposited in the York University Archives by David Millar, Department of Political Science, York University, in 1971. |
